Today is Good Friday, a holy day recognized by Christians around the world as the day Christ was crucified in Calvary. Matthew tells us many women watched as Christ suffered and then died on the cross (see Matt. 27:55). Among those women were Mary, the mother of Jesus, and Mary Magdalene. Messages of Christ has published a new video offering insights as to the significance of these women who stood as witnesses to the Savior’s life, death, and resurrection. 

Written by BYU religion professor John Hilton III and adapted from his book Considering the Cross: How Calvary Connects Us with Christ, we are taught several poignant lessons concerning what these women most likely would have experienced. They watched one whom they loved thirst and cry out in pain. Hilton offers insights as to how we can follow these women’s examples and so too be witnesses of Christ’s atoning sacrifice. 

This Easter, these women serve as powerful reminders that our sorrows can be swallowed up in Christ. The late Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin has said, “In the darkness of our sorrow, Sunday will come.” (Sunday Will Come). Just as these women witnessed the resurrected Christ on that Easter Sunday morn, so too can we testify that Jesus has risen and he lives again.
