  • Quote: “We qualify for eternal life through a process of conversion. As used here, this word of many meanings signifies not just a convincing but a profound change of nature. Jesus used this meaning when He taught His chief Apostle the difference between a testimony and a conversion. Jesus asked His disciples, ‘Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?’ (Matt. 16:13) Next He asked, ‘But whom say ye that I am?’” (Dallin H. Oaks, “The Challenge to Become”, October 2000 General Conference)
  • Quote: “And a testimony of the divinity of the Church is received only by obedience to the spiritual law—‘If any man will do his will, he shall know’—that means study, work, pray, keep the commandments, and our Heavenly Father will reveal to each of us, as he did to Peter, the divinity of his Son. When Jesus asked Peter, ‘But whom say ye that I am?’ Peter answered, ‘Thou art the Christ, the son of the Living God.’ Notice what Jesus answered: ‘For flesh and blood’—the Christ was flesh and blood—‘for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven’ ( Matt. 16:15-17)” (Thomas E. McKay, “Untitled”, April 1946 General Conference)
  • Quote: “Many men have tried to appraise Christ since his transcendent ministry began. Their estimates of him have ranged from blasphemous denunciation to self-sacrificing worship. Some ask whether such a man ever really lived or was he just a myth; was he an opportunist, sentimentalist, or social revolutionist; or possibly a man of genius, a wise man, a doer of wonderful works, or a great teacher? But if we consult the men who were closest to him, the men who followed him onto the Mount of Transfiguration, we shall learn that he was ‘. . . the Christ, the Son of the living God’ (Matt. 16:16) We ask each and all who are listening today to make his own appraisal of Jesus of Nazareth and determine whether or not he is the Christ, the Son of God. For ourselves we humbly bear witness to this transcendent fact. In the gospel of John he is referred to as the Word, who was with God in the beginning, who was God, by whom all things were made. He was the life and the light of men who was made flesh and dwelt among us (John 1:1-3,14)” (Hugh B. Brown, “The Fight Between Good and Evil”, October 1963 General Conference)

  • Quote: “Here again was truth looked upon as a misshapen and untimely growth. And yet, I ask all Christians who believe the Bible, do you doubt the words of Saul of Tarsus, who said that on his way to Damascus to persecute the saints, he saw a light which blinded him, and he heard a voice? He asked, ‘Who art thou, Lord?’ And the voice replied: ‘I am Jesus Christ whom thou persecutest’ (Acts 9:5).
“I say Christians believe that record, and yet they say God cannot speak to men. They who believe the Bible accept the record which tells us of the appearance of Moses and Elias on the Mount of Transfiguration and that Peter, James, and John were there and saw them in the presence of the Master (Matt. 17:1-3). Moses and Elias, mind you, had lived hundreds of years before that time, and yet men say: ‘Yes, we believe the Bible where it tells of that. It was done once, but it can’t be done again.’
“I repeat: Why should men think it a thing incredible that God should speak to men? (Acts 26:8) Has not that been his method throughout the ages? Do we not need him? Have our civilization, our science, and our boasted learning made us independent of him?” (Hugh B. Brown, “The Birth of Truth”, April 1970 General Conference)
  • Quote: “There is another world with which we mortals are little acquainted. It may not be far from us. Peter, James, and John, the Presidency of the Church, came to know the power of God. These three central figures climbed the high mountain with the Lord Jehovah, while he was yet in the mortal world before his crucifixion. In the high mountain was solitude, apartness, and privacy.
“What a glorious experience! The Son of God, their Master, ‘was transfigured before them, and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light’ (Matt. 17:2) and heavenly beings Moses and Elias appeared to them. ‘. . . a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; Hear ye him’ (Matt. 17:5 italics, added).
“The glory of the contact was more than they could bear and they collapsed, falling on their faces. While in this state unprintable, unspeakable, unutterable things were said and done. The three mortals thus protected survived even this withering fiery experience.
“Realizing that death by martyrdom was imminent and that a verbal witness could be forgotten and that his important knowledge must be perpetuated down through the ages, Peter bore his solemn witness in writing. No fable was this, no conjuring of the imagination was this, no imagination of human minds was this . . . it was real and certain: ‘(we) . . . were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he (Christ) received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. And which voice came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount’ (2 Pet. 1:16-18).
“The pattern was established, the chart made, the blueprint drawn. Under special need, at special times, under proper circumstances, God reveals himself to men who are prepared for such manifestations. And since God is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Heb. 13:8), the heavens cannot be closed except as men lock them against themselves with disbelief.” (Spencer W. Kimball, “‘...For They Shall See God’“, April 1964 General Conference)

  • Quote: “Observation number one regarding this account is that when facing the challenge of faith, the father asserts his strength first and only then acknowledges his limitation. His initial declaration is affirmative and without hesitation: ‘Lord, I believe.’ I would say to all who wish for more faith, remember this man! In moments of fear or doubt or troubling times, hold the ground you have already won, even if that ground is limited. In the growth we all have to experience in mortality, the spiritual equivalent of this boy’s affliction or this parent’s desperation is going to come to all of us. When those moments come and issues surface, the resolution of which is not immediately forthcoming, hold fast to what you already know and stand strong until additional knowledge comes. It was of this very incident, this specific miracle, that Jesus said, ‘If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you’ (Matthew 17:20). The size of your faith or the degree of your knowledge is not the issue—it is the integrity you demonstrate toward the faith you do have and the truth you already know.
“The second observation is a variation of the first. When problems come and questions arise, do not start your quest for faith by saying how much you do not have, leading as it were with your ‘unbelief.’ That is like trying to stuff a turkey through the beak! Let me be clear on this point: I am not asking you to pretend to faith you do not have. I am asking you to be true to the faith you do have. Sometimes we act as if an honest declaration of doubt is a higher manifestation of moral courage than is an honest declaration of faith. It is not! So let us all remember the clear message of this scriptural account: Be as candid about your questions as you need to be; life is full of them on one subject or another. But if you and your family want to be healed, don’t let those questions stand in the way of faith working its miracle.” (Jeffrey R. Holland, “‘Lord, I Believe’“, April 2013 General Conference)
  • Quote: “As to repentance’s prerequisite of faith, the scriptures are clear. All that’s initially required is a mere ‘particle of faith’ (Alma 32:27). And if we can muster this ‘mustard seed’ (Matthew 17:20) mentality, we too can expect unexpected and exceptional improvements in our lives. But remember, just as we would not attempt to go from being Attila the Hun to Mother Teresa overnight, so too should we reorient our patterns of improvement incrementally. Even if the changes needed in your life are wholesale, begin at a small scale. That’s especially true if you are feeling overwhelmed or discouraged.
“This process is not always accomplished in a linear fashion. Even among the most determined there may be setbacks. Having experienced the frustration of this in my own life, I know that it can sometimes feel like 1 percent forward and 2 percent back. Yet if we remain undaunted in our determination to consistently eke out those 1 percent gains, He who has ‘carried our sorrows’ (Isaiah 53:4) will surely carry us.” (Michael A. Dunn, “One Percent Better”, October 2021 General Conference)

(3) And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for divers of them came from afar.

(4) And his disciples answered him, From whence can a man satisfy these men with bread here in the wilderness?

(4) And his disciples answered him, From whence can a man satisfy these, so great a multitude, with bread here in the wilderness?

(6) And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and brake, and gave to his disciples to set before them; and they did set them before the people.

(6) And he commanded the people to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and brake, and gave to his disciples to set before the people. And they did set them before the people.

(7) And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed, and commanded to set them also before them.

(7) And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed them and commanded to set them also before the people that they should eat.

(8) So they did eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken meat that was left seven baskets.

(8) So they did eat, and were filled: and they took up of the broken bread that was left seven baskets.

(12) And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and saith, Why doth this generation seek after a sign? verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation.

(12) And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and said, Why doth this generation seek after a sign? Verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation save the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly, so likewise shall the Son of Man be buried in the bowels of the earth.

(13) And he left them, and entering into the ship again departed to the other side.

(13) And he left them, and entering into the ship again he departed to the other side.

(14) Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with them more than one loaf.

(14) Now the multitude had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with them more than one loaf.

(15) And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.

(15) And he charged them, saying, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.

(16) And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have no bread.

(16) And they reasoned among themselves, saying, He hath said this because we have no bread.

(17) And when Jesus knew it, he saith unto them, Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet hardened?

(17) And when they said this among themselves Jesus knew it, and he said unto them, Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? Perceive ye not yet, neither understand ye? Are your hearts yet hardened?

(19) When I brake the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? They say unto him, Twelve.

(19) When I brake the five loaves among the five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? They say unto him, Twelve.

(20) And when the seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? And they said, Seven.

(20) And when the seven among the four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? And they said, Seven.

(23) And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw ought.

(23) And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the town; and when he had spit upon his eyes, and put his hands upon him, he asked him if he saw aught.

(24) And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees, walking.

(24) And he looked up, and he said, I see men as trees, walking.

(26) And he sent him away to his house, saying, Neither go into the town, nor tell it to any in the town.

(26) And he sent him away to his house, saying, Neither go into the town, nor tell what is done to any in the town.

(29) And he saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Peter answereth and saith unto him, Thou art the Christ.

(29) And he said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Peter answered and saith unto him, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.

(31) And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.

(31) And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.

(32) And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him.

(32) And he spoke that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him.

(33) But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.

(33) But when he had turned about and looked upon his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.

(34) And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

(34) And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

(35) For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it.

(35) For whosoever will save his life shall lose it, or whosoever will save his life shall be willing to lay it down for my sake. And if he is not willing to lay it down for my sake, he shall lose it. But whosoever shall be willing to lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it.

(37) Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

(37) Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? Therefore, deny yourselves of these, and be not ashamed of me.

(38) Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.

(38) Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. Ad they shall not have part in that resurrection when he cometh. For verily I say unto you that he shall come, and he that layeth down his life for my sake and the gospel’s shall come with him and shall be clothed with his glory in the cloud on the right hand of the Son of Man.

(6) For he knew not what to say; for they were sore afraid.

(8) And suddenly, when they had looked round about, they saw no man any more, save Jesus only with themselves.

(8) And suddenly, when they had looked round about with great astonishment, they saw no man anymore, save Jesus only with themselves. And immediately they departed.

(9) And as they came down from the mountain, he charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen, till the Son of man were risen from the dead.

(9) And as they came down from the mountain, he charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen, till the Son of Man was risen from the dead.

(12) And he answered and told them, Elias verily cometh first, and restoreth all things; and how it is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things, and be set at nought.

(12) And he answered and told them, saying, Elias verily cometh first and prepareth all things and teacheth you of the prophets, how it is written of the Son of man, that he must suffer many things, and be set at naught.

(13) But I say unto you, That Elias is indeed come, and they have done unto him whatsoever they listed, as it is written of him.

(13) Again I say unto you, That Elias is indeed come, but they have done unto him whatsoever they listed, and even as it is written of him. And he bore record of me, and they received him not. Verily this was Elias.

(14) And when he came to his disciples, he saw a great multitude about them, and the scribes questioning with them.

(17) And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, who hath a dumb spirit that is a devil.

(18) And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not.

(18) And when he seizeth him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they might cast him out; and they could not.

(19) He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me.

(19) Jesus spake unto him and said, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me.

(20) And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming.

(20) And they brought him unto Jesus. And when the man saw him, immediately he was torn by the spirit, and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming.

(21) And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child.

(21) And Jesus asked his father, How long a time is it since this came unto him? And his father said, When a child,

(22) And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us.

(22) And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst, I ask thee to have compassion on us, and help us.

(23) Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.

(23) Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt believe all things I shall say unto you, this is possible to him that believeth.

(24) And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.

(24) And immediately the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.

(25) When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him.

(25) When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit I charge thee to come out of him, and enter no more into him.

(26) And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead.

(26) Now the dumb and deaf spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead.

(28) And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out?

(30) And they departed thence, and passed through Galilee; and he would not that any man should know it.

(30) And they departed thence, and passed through Galilee privately, for he would not that any man should know it.

(31) For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day.

(31) And he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of Man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day.

(33) And he came to Capernaum: and being in the house he asked them, What was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the way?

(33) And he came to Capernaum: and being in the house he asked them, Why was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the way?

(34) But they held their peace: for by the way they had disputed among themselves, who should be the greatest.

(34) But they held their peace, being afraid, for by the way they had disputed among themselves, who was the greatest among them.

(35) And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.

(35) Now Jesus sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, he shall be last of all, and servant of all.

(36) And he took a child, and set him in the midst of them: and when he had taken him in his arms, he said unto them,

(36) And he took a child, and sat in the midst of them: and when he had taken him in his arms, he said unto them,

(37) Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but him that sent me.

(37) Whosoever shall humble himself like one of these children, and receiveth me, ye shall receive in my name. And whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me only, but him that sent me, even the Father.

(38) And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us.

(38) And John answered him, saying, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and he followed not us, and we forbad him, because he followeth not us.

(39) But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me.

(39) But Jesus said, Forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me.

(41) For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.

(41) And whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.

(43) And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

(43) Therefore if thy hand offend thee, cut it off, or if thy brother offend thee and confess not and forsake not, he shall be cut off. It is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell. For it is better for thee to enter into life without thy brother than for thee and thy brother to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

(45–46) And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

(45–46) And again, if thy foot offend thee, cut it off. For he that is thy standard by whom thou walkest, if he become a transgressor he shall be cut off. It is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched. Therefore, let every man stand or fall himself and not for another, or not trusting another.

Seek unto my father, and it shall be done in that very moment what ye shall ask, if ye ask in faith, believing that ye shall receive.

(47) And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:

(47) And if thine eye which seeth for thee, him that is appointed to watch over thee to show thee light, become a transgressor and offend thee, pluck him out. It is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire. For it is better that thyself should be saved than to be cast into hell with thy brother,

(48) Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

(48) Where their worm dieth not, and where the fire is not quenched.

(50) Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.

(50) But the salt must be good, for if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it (the sacrifice)? Therefore, it must needs be that ye have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.
